About Private Scribe

Throughout my childhood and most of my adult life, I could barely read my own handwriting — anyone else, forget it! Computers, printers, and digital text all served me well, but lacked any kind of warmth or originality. A few years ago, I started getting interested in pen pals and connections to people in far-away countries. Since most people in that circle strongly prefer handwritten notes, I started writing to my new friends. After a few returns and sharp comments on my “unreadable chicken scratches,” I decided to take some time practicing my writing skills. I started spending twenty minutes a day copying from a practice book into one of my notebooks, and started seeing incredible improvements in just a few weeks.

Once writing by hand became enjoyable, and people could read what I wrote, I really enjoyed writing letters and copying text from my favorite books. I began to accumulate writing tools (pens, papers, brushes, inks, rulers) and explore the highways and byways of the written word. I learned about alphabets, calligraphy, and art in general, and the letter arts in particular. What used to be stressful and frustrating is now an important part of my daily life.

Private Scribe is my labor of love. I love the written word and writing. There is long, historical tradition of scribes, dating back to early history, continuing through the modern era. Scribes translated the spoken word into written form to preserve them for the ages.
